Threaded Lug Guide and Jack Adapters: Safer Wheel Changes

Use a threaded lug guide and Tesla jack adapters to line up the wheel and lift safely. Follow these steps for a smoother wheel change or rotation.

Quick answer

Thread a lug guide into the hub before lifting, then use a jack adapter on the correct lift point. The guide holds the wheel aligned while you start the first lug nut, and the adapter protects the battery pack or chassis from the jack.

Why the order matters: guide before jack

A threaded lug guide works as a hanger and alignment tool. If you lift the car first and then try to balance the wheel on the hub, you add unnecessary movement while the car is in the air. Install the guide while the wheel is still on the ground and the hub is easy to reach.

One guide or two?

With one threaded lug guide, the wheel hangs and you can rotate it to line up the remaining holes. With two, the wheel is instantly aligned because the second guide fixes the rotation. If you rotate wheels often, two guides reduce the fiddle factor; for occasional use, one is enough to get the job done.

Jack adapter check before you order

Jack adapters are not universal. The supplied catalog notes that the jack adapters are not compatible with LFP Models. To check, open Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. If “High Voltage Battery type: Lithium Iron Phosphate” is listed, do not use these adapters. This is a fitment limitation, not a install error.

Step-by-step wheel change with a lug guide and jack adapter

  1. Check adapter compatibility: Before lifting, confirm your Tesla does not have an LFP battery by navigating to Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. If “High Voltage Battery type: Lithium Iron Phosphate” is listed, do not use the jack adapters. If you see Lithium Iron Phosphate, stop and use a different lifting method.
  2. Loosen lug nuts on the ground: With the wheel on the ground, break the lug nuts loose about a quarter turn. Do not remove them yet. Never loosen lug nuts while the car is raised.
  3. Install the threaded lug guide: Thread one lug guide into a lug hole on the hub. If using two, thread the second guide into the opposite hole for instant alignment. Hand-tighten the guide; do not overtighten it.
  4. Position the jack adapter: Place the jack adapter on the correct lift point under the car. Center it so the jack saddle contacts the adapter, not the battery or plastic trim. Double-check that the adapter sits flush before lifting.
  5. Raise the car and remove the wheel: Lift the car until the wheel clears the ground. Remove the remaining lug nuts and slide the wheel off the hub, letting the guide support it. Keep the guide in place; it holds the wheel while you work.
  6. Mount the new wheel on the guide: Slide the wheel onto the guide and push it against the hub. Start the first lug nut by hand, then add the others. With two guides, the wheel is already aligned; with one, rotate the wheel until the holes line up.
  7. Remove the guide and torque: Remove the threaded lug guide and install the final lug nut. Lower the car and torque all lug nuts to the specification in your owner’s manual. Re-check torque after the first drive following a wheel change.

Product facts

  • Threaded Lug Guide: Sold as a single unit; two guides give instant wheel alignment, while one acts as a hanger and alignment tool. Buy one if you change wheels occasionally; buy two if you rotate often and want faster, hands-free alignment.
